Portageville tops South Pemiscot for the 12th straight time

PORTAGEVILLE, Mo. — The Portageville girls’ basketball team defeated South Pemiscot 52-38 on Thursday, Jan. 5.

Portageville (7-4) was led by Ja’Niyah Smith and Amiyah Saxton, who scored 15 and 13, respectively. Laney Stone added 10.

“I was proud of the way the girls played tonight,” said Portageville coach Kellye Fowler. “Especially in the first half. We didn’t shoot extremely well tonight but we continued to play hard defensively and rebound and eventually, we found ways to score. I tried out some different combinations in the fourth and worked on some different things and we didn’t execute as well as I would have liked but that’s how you learn and get better.”

It was Portageville’s 12th straight win against South Pemiscot.

South Pemiscot last win in the series came in 2014.

Takalah Wooden scored a game-high 24 for South Pemiscot (2-3).

Portageville will play at Caruthersville (0-7) on Friday.

while South Pemiscot travels to Campbell (6-4) on Monday, Jan. 9.
