MALDEN, Mo. — Portageville racked up multiple run-rule victories before a hard-fought loss in the finale of the Malden Invitational Tournament this past weekend.
“We obviously didn’t have the finish we wanted, but overall we had a great weekend,” said Portageville coach Tyler Trover. “Scott City is a very good baseball team. They are in the midst of an incredible season and are a well-deserving champion.
“We still love our team,” he continued. “We have played, possibly, the toughest Class 2 schedule in the state. This was intentional, with the idea of where we want to be at the end of the year.”
The Bulldogs (18-6) kicked off the tournament with a resounding 16-1 win over Doniphan (4-7) on Friday, ending the game after just three innings.
Carson Bradley earned the win on the mound, while Mason Adams (2-for-2, 2 RBIs) and Beau-Hunter Warren (2-for-3, double, 2 RBIs) fueled the offense.
Portageville continued its onslaught with a 20-1 win over New Madrid County Central (2-12), also in three innings.
Xayvion Bogan pitched a gem, allowing no earned runs with six strikeouts.
Bradley (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), Jayquan Bogan (2-for-2, 3 RBIs), and Huston Partin (2-for-2, 3 RBIs) led the charge at the plate.
Saturday brought another shortened victory, this time a 13-1 win over East Prairie (9-8) in four innings.
Warren secured the win on the mound, striking out eight. Xayvion Bogan (2-for-2, home run, double, 2 RBIs), Warren (3-for-3, 4 RBIs), and Aaron Dunlap (2-for-2, 3 runs scored) shined offensively.
The championship game against Class 3 No. 2 Scott City proved a tougher test. Despite a valiant effort, Portageville ultimately fell 11-7.
Mason Adams (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBIs) stood out for Portageville, while Scott City (20-1) countered with multiple-hit performances from five different players.
The Bulldogs quickly regained their winning stride on Monday, April 15, with a 16-2 victory at Campbell (5-5).
Xayvion Bogan led the way, dominating on the mound and at the plate (2-for-4).
Rylan Partin (3-for-3, HR, double, 3 RBIs) put on a power display, while Conner Johnson (4-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs), Owen Roberts (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), Adams (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), and Carson Bradley (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) provided further offensive firepower.
Portageville will host Caruthersville (11-5) on Wednesday, April 15.
