Poplar Bluff’s Chris Matlock headed to SEMO

The Southeast Missouri State University football team added another Mule to its roster for the upcoming season.

Poplar Bluff’s Chris Matlock signed a letter of commitment Tuesday for an opportunity at the next level with the Redhawks.

“My time at Poplar Bluff High really holds a special place for me because of the fond memories I will always cherish,” Matlock said about moving on from the Mules. “I loved this atmosphere here my whole career and will miss it.”

For his final season, Matlock recorded 37 receptions for 635 yards and hauled in seven touchdowns. Defensively, he ended his career with 137 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, one sack and six interceptions.

He received All-Conference at defensive back and wide receiver, All-Region and All-District first team at receiver, a two-time SEMO Conference first-team defensive back and an All-State nominee.

Matlock won’t be heading to Cape Girardeau alone, as he will have a familiar face alongside him on the gridiron. Earlier this year, Kayson King also signed to play offensive tackle for SEMO.

Matlock, who spent most of his seasons as a receiver and cornerback, has enough snaps on both sides of the ball, which will give him an edge to play at any position that SEMO throws his way.

“The plan is for SEMO to play me at safety,” Matlock said. “I am going to start summer school with them to begin working out with my new teammates.”

While football is a top priority for Matlock, he’s also using this opportunity to tackle academics with his plan to major in health sciences.
