SIKESTON -- Youth and inconsistency many times go hand in hand, and no one knows this better than Notre Dame coach Chris Janet.

A poor second quarter erased three quarters of solid play, and the Bulldogs lost to Poplar Bluff 65-56 on Thursday in a consolation game in the Sikeston Tournament.

Leading 14-12, Notre Dame (2-3) was outscored 21-7 in the second quarter. Poplar Bluff sophomore Michael Kilgore broke down the Bulldogs' defense, scoring 12 of his game-high 21 points in the quarter.

After trailing by as many as 19 points in the second half, Notre Dame cut the deficit to four points. But turnovers prevented any further advancement.

"If we eliminate mistakes, we have a chance to win," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "And we didn't play good defense in the second quarter. We let Kilgore go wild."

After a slow first half, Jason Rubel led Notre Dame with 19 points. Zach Miller added 15 and Michael Wehner totaled 12.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jackson 63, Fredericktown 24

FREDERICKTOWN -- Jackson led 23-7 after one quarter and 35-11 at halftime in its easy win over an inexperienced Fredericktown team on Thursday.

Fredericktown went 19-6 last season, but lost four starters to graduation.

Jackson, which will play host to Cor Jesu on Saturday, improved to 3-0.

"Fredericktown's down quite a bit this year. It's going to be a long season for them," said Jackson coach Ron Cook. "We just have more talent than they do this season."

Jackson's Melissa Palmer, a 5-foot-10 junior forward, led all scorers with 18 points. Christa Millham added 16 and Dana Eakins totaled 10.

WRESTLING

Ste. Genevieve 74, Cape Central (-2)

Friday was not a good night for Cape Central -- athletically or sportsmanship-wise.

Not only was Central swept by a powerful Ste. Genevieve squad, but a few Tigers took objection to a referee's rulings, voiced their displeasure to him, and were assessed a two-point misconduct penalty, hence the team's negative point total.

Central fell to 0-3 in dual meets.
