Playing without leading scorer Alex Wieser, Cape Central fell to Poplar Bluff 50-39 Thursday night in girls basketball action.
The Tigers (7-5) started the game on an 8-0 run but it didn't take the Mules (9-3) long to respond with a run of their own. Poplar Bluff tied the game with a 15-7 spurt midway through the second quarter.
Maggie Welchhance gave the Mules the lead for good on a putback and free throw with 2:39 left in the half. The Mules took a 25-21 advantage into the locker rooms.
Poplar Bluff used rebounding in the first half to net 11 second-chance points.
The Mules took a 38-31 lead into the fourth quarter and held off the Tigers.
Megan McDonald led Central with 18 points while Laura Beard had 10.
Omega Key led the way for the Mules with 14 points.
Wieser missed the game with a broken finger.
Anna-Jonesboro (Ill.) 62, Notre Dame 57
Notre Dame could not overcome a sizzling free throw shooting performance by Anna-Jonesboro and lost on the road.
Anna-Jonesboro hit 21 of 22 free throws and shook off several Bulldog (5-7) comebacks to edge Notre Dame. Kassie Drew lit up the Bulldogs for 39 of Anna-Jonesboro's 62 points.
Ashley Millham led Notre Dame with 24 points.
Anna-Jonesboro led throughout, leading 37-24 at halftime and 50-39 entering the fourth quarter.
St. Vincent 54, Grandview 47
St. Vincent used a strong first half for a home victory over Grandview . The Squaws, who led 33-14 at halftime, were led by Danielle Schremp's 20 points. Dani Emmendorfer added 14 for the Squaws (6-4). Grandview fell to 4-5.
Dexter 52, Scott City 38
Dexter outscored the Rams in each of the first three quarters en route to a road victory.
Dexter took a 17-13 lead into the second quarter and opened up a 31-16 halftime lead.
Jenny Pinkston netted 10 points for Scott City (6-6).
Hannah Burleson scored 18 points for Dexter (9-2).
Perryville 52, Crystal City 27
Perryville (6-6) evened its record with an easy victory at home over Crystal City (8-5).
April Lorenz netted 22 points for Perryville.
Kelly 71, Sikeston 50
Kelly (7-4) eased past Sikeston at home with the help of three double figure scorers. Cara Scherer led the way with 18 while Dana Essner and Christy Kluesner each netted 16.
Sikeston was led by Jennifer Medlin's 15 points. Page Silverthorn and Stephanie Clark each added 10.
BOYS' BASKETBALL
Meadow Heights 83, Bismarck 51
Meadow Heights went 11 for 18 from 3-point range and used a big second quarter to pull away from Bismarck at home.
Brad Adams led the outside attack, going a perfect 6 for 6 from behind the arc. Meadow Heights (7-3) trailed 13-10 after the first quarter, before outscoring Bismarck 27-9 in the second period. Adams finished with a game-high 25 points.
Joey Bell added 18 points while Terry Wagner had 12 and Chris Burr 11.
Grandview 64, St. Vincent 57
St. Vincent fell in the St. Genevieve Tournament and will play in the third-place game Saturday against St. Pius. The Indians (3-4) were led by Alex Armbruster who netted 19 points. Matt Wengert added 12 and Tyler Paulus contributed 11.
Nick Collins led the way for Grandview with 19 points.
JV BASKETBALL
Saxony Lutheran 53, Scott City Freshman 36
Saxony Lutheran (11-3), which sports one sophomore to go along with its freshmen group, improved to 7-1 against freshmen competition. Casey Petzoldt led Saxony Lutheran with 12 points. Scott City got 12 points from Landond Hill.
FRESHMAN BASKETBALL
Central 34, Sikeston 33
Central's freshmen moved their record to 2-6 with a win over Sikeston at home.
Central used a strong team defensive effort to squeak by the Indians.
WRESTLING
Central 37, Sikeston 33
In front of a near capacity crowd the Tigers edged Sikeston to improve to 3-2 in duel meets.
Trever Duncan and Cory Huskey moved up weights to pick up key wins for the Tigers.
Jackson 52, Ste. Genevieve 19
Jackson improved to 4-0 with an impressive win over visiting Ste. Genevieve.
Cody Rouse, Kramer Rampley and Brock Howard all moved to 21-1 on the season with pins. Jackson also got pins from Ben McMillian, Josh Schumacher and Charles Doerge.
