POPLAR BLUFF -- The host Mules claimed the 12-team Poplar Bluff Invitational with Jackson finishing in a surprising tie for third place with the Poplar Bluff junior varsity Monday at Westwood Country Club.

Poplar Bluff won the 18-hole tournament with a four-player score of 316, followed by Sikeston in second place with a 323. Jackson and the Mules' JV tied for third with scores of 324. Cape Central finished in sixth place with a 332.

Craig Hutson and Tom Henderson paced Jackson, shooting 79's on the par 71 course. Gabe Estes and Andy Kohl followed with twin-83's.

"Our guys shot better than their average," said Jackson coach Ron Cook. "I'm really happy with our performance."

Dan Groesbeck led the Tigers, recording a score of 78. Dane McLaird (80) and Bryan Welker (85) followed. Mike Oslund and Jeff Haycraft both carded 89's to provide the Tigers' final score.

Jackson goes to Dexter today. Central hosts New Madrid on Thursday.

Notre Dame 176, Perryville 178

PERRYVILLE -- A little more familiarity with the Perryville Country Club came in handy for Notre Dame as the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 overall with Monday's victory over the Pirates.

Notre Dame improved its score by eight strokes from a match with St. Vincent last Thursday. John Brey, Matt Howard and Chris Koepper all scored 43's on the par-35 course. Jonathan Legrand and Nick Spantgos both carded 47's to provide the fourth team score.

Perryville's Andy Besand shot a 40 to win medalist honors.

Notre Dame goes to Kimbeland Country Club on Wednesday for a triangular match with Malden and host Jackson.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jackson 3, Notre Dame 1

Julie Wunderlich scored two first-half goals Wednesday to spark Jackson to a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame at Shawnee Soccer Park.

Julian Hall assisted on Wunderlich's second goal and Amanda Buessink added the Lady Indians' final goal in the second half. The victory improved Jackson to 5-1. Cindi Cox scored for Notre Dame (3-5-1) off an assist from Jill Edwards.

In the junior varsity contest, Lacy Hodo scored both Jackson goals in a 2-1 win.

Jackson goes back to Shawnee Park on Friday to face Cape Central in a make-up game. Notre Dame faces the Lady Tigers today.
