Pirates turn early lead into win over Reds

CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. returned to the Cincinnati Reds' lineup with two singles and a sacrifice fly, but Brian Giles tripled and homered Monday night as the Pittsburgh Pirates took an early lead and held on for a 6-5 victory.

Griffey, out with a pulled hamstring since June 24, only jogged after he hit the ball and went 2-for-3 with a walk and a seventh-inning sacrifice fly to the warning track.

Marlins 2, Braves 1

MIAMI -- A.J. Burnett allowed a run in six innings as Florida handed Greg Maddux his first loss in 16 starts and snapped Atlanta's six-game winning streak.

Maddux (9-3) lost for the first time since April 30. In the following 15 starts, he went 7-0 with a 2.28 ERA.

The right-hander gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings. Burnett (9-7) was just slightly better, yielding five hits and striking out six.

Mets 5, Expos 2

NEW YORK -- Pinch-hitter Marco Scutaro made a name for himself at Shea Stadium with his first major league hit, a two-run triple off Tomo Ohka (8-5) that broke a seventh-inning tie.

The Mets, scrambling back into the NL wild card race, won for the seventh time in nine games. Mo Vaughn hit his 15th homer, David Weathers (4-3) got the victory; Armando Benitez got his 24th save.

Cubs 7, Phillies 6

CHICAGO -- Sammy Sosa hit his 30th homer and singled home the tying run during a ninth-inning rally as Chicago beat Philadelphia.

Fred McGriff hit a game-winning RBI double.

Astros 3, Brewers 1

HOUSTON -- Wade Miller pitched seven strong innings to beat Milwaukee for the 10th time in 11 decisions, leading Houston over the Brewers.

Milwaukee dropped its eighth straight game.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Blue Jays 6, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE -- Vernon Wells had his first career two-homer game, and Chris Woodward and Carlos Delgado also connected to lead Toronto.

Wells hit solo shots in the fifth and sixth innings. His first home run preceded a drive by Woodward, and his second followed a three-run blast by Delgado.

Twins 11, White Sox 6

CHICAGO -- Jacque Jones had a career-high five hits and a home run as Minnesota beat Chicago for its sixth straight win, increasing their AL Central lead to 14 games.

The Twins had 17 hits and scored six runs in the sixth inning just hours after the White Sox fired pitching coach Nardi Contreras and replaced him with Don Cooper.
