The Perryville boys had a strong showing at the Class 4 District 1 track and field meet Saturday at Hillsboro High School, winning a district title in the 1,600-meter relay and qualifying for the sectional meet in an additional eight events.
The Pirates relays led the way, with the 1,600 group of Payton Besand, Pablo Mattingly, Emilio Mattingly and Kyle Wood standing atop the podium with a time of 3 minutes, 31.37 seconds. Besand and the two Mattinglys joined forces with Caleb Hadler for the 400 and 800 relays and finished second in both to move on to sectionals.
Hadler and Pablo Mattingly also advanced to the sectional meet in the 400 and triple jump, respectively.
Eric Roth finished second for Perryville in both the 200 and the 300 hurdles to keep his season alive in those two events.
Cape Girardeau Central will be represented by three athletes at the sectional meet, as Rico Flye (high jump; second), Christian Mitchell (shot put; second) and Patrick Buck (discus; third) all advanced.
Notre Dame's 3,200-relay team of Matt Gibbs, Rudy McClellan, Gabrial Meadors and Weiguo Wu finished third to carry the torch for the Bulldogs.
One of the day's best perfromances in the girls' competition came from Central's Quetaja Martin, who qualified for sectionals in a pair of events and earned a district championship in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 10 1/2 inches. She was runner-up in the discus.
Her teammate Ul-Envi Johnson moved on to the sectional meet with a third-place finish in the discus, while Alexus Walker will represent the Tigers at the next meet in the 100 and long jump, finishing second in both.
Central also qualified in two relay runs, finishing as runner-up in both the 400 (Kylie Lane, Jaleria Dent, Brittnee Blackmon, Walker) and 800 (Lane, Blackmon, Walker, Salia Hamilton). Notre Dame had a strong day of advancement, with sectional qualification in four events.
Individually, Jaden Barnes finished second in the pole vault while Katherine Hanners (1,600) and Courtney Jones (high jump) move on thanks to third-place finishes; relay teams in the 1,600 (Lilly Edwards, Jones, Claire Morrill, Megan Jansen) and 3,200 (Edwards, Hanners, Jansen, Morrill) earned qualification. The 1,600 group finished atop the podium with a time of 4:08.28, while the 3,200 landed in second.
Perryville's Lydia Cook finished in third in the 800 to advance.

The Jackson boys and girls teams each finished second in the team standings at Northwest High School in Cedar Hill, Missouri, with the girls sending qualifiers through to the sectional meet in nine events and the boys doing so in eight.
The ladies dominated the distance and field events.
Chelsea Drum was twice an individual district champion, winning the 1,600 (5:14.76) and the 3,200 (11:28.25), while also participating in both the 1,600 relay -- with Carli Knott, Morgan Stone and Kaylee Wilson -- and 3,200 relay -- with Megan Barnum, Knott and Wilson -- that took the top spots at districts.
Knott was a winner in the 800 with a time of 2:21.56.
Stone and Wilson both qualified for sectionals by taking second and third, respectively, in the 400. Barnum was runner-up to Drum in the 1,600.
In the field events, the Indians saw Nicole Humphrey's a dual title-winner in the shot put (39-02) and discus (112-02), while Katherine Schumer topped the podium in the pole vault.
Olivia Brown landed in second, behind Humphreys, in the discus.
Barnum also qualified for sectionals with a fourth-place finish in the 800.
The boys were not as dominant but did claim three district titles, including the 3,200-relay team (Caleb Bess, Ean Buffington, Gabriel Dudley, Jackson Givens), which posted a time of 8:20.50.
