PERRYVILLE -- "It was a victory," said Perryville High football coach Jerry Tucker, describing his team's 27-11 triumph over John Burroughs Friday night, "but I wouldn't call it a win."

After spotting the Bombers (1-5) a 3-0 lead, Perryville scored 27 points unanswered before John Burroughs pushed one across with 1:31 remaining in the game.

Andy Haertling, a senior fullback who rushed for 93 yards in 10 attempts, broke off a 46-yard scoring run, and Perryville (6-1) led 7-3 after one quarter.

Then 4:24 before halftime, senior halfback Matt Jenkins, who posted 185 yards in 14 carries, sped 65 yards to make the score 14-3 at the intermission.

A 1-yard touchdown burst from Haertling in the third quarter and a 3-yard scoring run from Jenkins in the fourth padded the Pirates' lead.

Perryville amassed 342 yards rushing in 342 attempts, but Tucker said that figure was just an average one for his team.

"We'll have to take it up another notch to beat Windsor next week," Tucker said. "But this game was a good test for us. We played well."

Scott City 51, Hayti 8

SCOTT CITY -- Scott City would be hard pressed to muster a more dominating first half.

Leading 30-0 after one quarter, the Rams pushed their lead to 51-0 by the break. Junior Matt Underwood's four rushing touchdowns helped to usher Scott City to the rout.

"We wanted to set the tone early," said Scott City coach Terry Flannigan, whose team is ranked No. 7 in Class 2A and improved to 6-1, dropping Hayti to 0-7. "We knew if we came out and played we could take control real quick."

Dale Burger ran back the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown. Other scores in the quarter came on a 9-yard run from Underwood, a 45-yard run from Burger, a safety and a 44-yard pass to Rafe Camp from Lance Amick.

FREDERICKTOWN -- Fredericktown didn't score until the fourth quarter, and by that time North County, ranked No. 10 in Class 4A, led 36-0.

"They shut us down," said Fredericktown coach Kent Gibbs. "They've just got a better team than we do."

North County advanced to 6-1; the Black Cats are now 2-5.

Jeremy Penwell scored Fredericktown's touchdown on a 7-yard run. Luke McKinnis completed 6 of 12 passes for 76 yards.
