Perryville reaches tournament final

Perryville moved into the championship game of the Chester, Ill., boys basketball tournament with a victory Thursday night, while Saxony Lutheran captured its tournament opener.

Perryville posted its second win in the six-team, pool play event and extended its winning streak to four games by easing past Christ Our Savior 57-49.

Ricky Dunn poured in 30 points for the Pirates (4-7), while Michael Fritsche added 13.

Saxony Lutheran began pool play by routing Elverado, Ill., 84-55.

Casey Petzoldt and Alex Jauch each scored 18 points for the Crusaders (10-3), while Lauren Lueders, Ben Curtois and Tim Lorenz each added 10 points.

Point guard Trey Maevers had 10 assists and just one turnover.

The Crusaders will finish pool play against New Athens (Ill.) at 6 p.m. today. The winner advances to Saturday's 7:30 p.m. championship game against Perryville.

Meadow Heights used a 33-point third quarter to pull away from Bismarck on the road.

The Panthers (7-4), playing their first game in 15 days, only made nine of 36 field goals in the first half before scoring 31 points in the first four minutes of the third quarter. Anthony Bollinger scored 17 of his game-high 24 points during that span.

Micah Wright was part of three winning events as Central edged Poplar Bluff on the road.

Wright won the 50-yard freestyle event in 26.75 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:00.19. He also joined Bryce Max, Jared Siemers and Daniel Austin on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (4:27.18).

Hunter Givens won the 200 freestyle (1:57.06) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.63). Austin placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:05.21) and Jason Mercer won the 100 butterfly (58.67).

• The Central junior varsity basketball team defeated Kelly 54-23 on Wednesday in the second night of play at its round-robin tournament. George Hamilton scored 17 points for Central (6-4), which hosts Sikeston at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the final day of the event. Sikeston defeated Perryville 54-25 on Wednesday.

* Notre Dame claimed first place in the Central freshmen boys basketball tournament with a 38-36 win Thursday against Jackson in the title game. Trenton Vance led the Bulldogs with nine points.
