FARMINGTON -- Perryville High's golf team gained a berth in the Class 3A state tournament Monday for the first time since the program was revived six years ago.
The Pirates placed second, one stroke behind the winning score of 350 posted by Ste. Genevieve. The Dragons placed fifth in Class 3A last season and returned three of the top five golfers from that team.
The top two squads in the 10-team District 1 tournament, played at Eagle Lake Country Club, advanced.
"We're just happy to go," said Perryville coach Lynn O'Neal.
Two Pirates placed in the top 10 and made the all-district team. Senior Derek Cattoor, who shot an 11-over 83, placed third and will make his third state appearance. Ryan Besand took eighth with an 85.
Jeff Hotop shot a 90 and Nathan Rellergert a 95. Andy Tanz, who shot a 99, will also make the trip to state, set for next Monday and Tuesday.

JACKSON -- Two Notre Dame golfers qualified for the state meet but the team placed third and missed the cut.
Nick Martin took third with a 9-over 81 and Tim Buerck was fourth with an 83 on Notre Dame's home course, Bent Creek Golf Course.
Notre Dame's next two were Derek Welter (99) and Jordan Tatum (109).
Kennett shot a 342 and won the tournament. Arcadia Valley was second with a 350 and the Bulldogs third with a 372.
"I was a little disappointed that we didn't qualify the team," said Notre Dame coach Chris Janet, "but Nick Martin and Tim Buerck both shot extremely well."
