ST. LOUIS -- Perryville High's girls basketball team used a big third quarter to pull away and beat DeSoto 65-41 Friday during a consolation quarterfinal game of the Visitation Tournament.

The Lady Pirates, who raised their record to 7-4, were led offensively by April Watts with 14 points. Also in double figures were Laura Ernst with 12, Tiffany Perkins with 10 and Renee Kaempfe with 10.

Perryville was ahead just 30-24 at halftime but pulled away with a 19-7 third-quarter edge.

"We played pretty good in the third quarter," said Perryville coach Vicki Lohmann. "It was a pretty close game until then. We put on a full-court press and mostly dominated."

The Lady Pirates will play at noon today in the consolation semifinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

H. Central 84, St. Vincent 48

STE. GENEVIEVE -- St. Vincent ran into one of the top-rated squads in the St. Louis area Friday and suffered a lopsided setback during the opening round of the eight-team Ste. Genevieve Tournament.

The Indians (1-7) will play Ste. Genevieve at 4 p.m. today in a consolation game.

St. Vincent got 13 points from Josh Wheeler and 10 from Dustin Moll.

Hazelwood Central led 53-22 at halftime and coasted in the second half.

Perryville also played Friday in the tournament, losing to Blue Springs 47-41. No other details were available at press time. Perryville will play Parkway North at 5:30 p.m. today.

Lutheran South 82, Zalma 46

PARK HILLS -- Zalma, the 16th and last seed, lost to top-seeded Lutheran South Friday in the opening round of the annual Park Hills Christmas Tournament.

The Bulldogs (2-6) were led by Josh Smith with 15 points and Gandy Wade with 11.

Zalma trailed just 18-14 after one quarter but fell behind 40-26 at halftime.

"They had a lot of depth and kind of wore us down," said Zalma coach John Martin.

The Bulldogs will play a consolation game at 10 a.m. today.
