PERRYVILLE -- Notre Dame girls basketball team opened its season with a nail-biter Monday, but saw Perryville escape with a 41-10 victory in the round-robin Perryville Tournament.

Tiffany Perkins paced Perryville (1-0) with 12 points while Amy Verseman added 11.

Jessica Serrati was the lone Notre Dame player to break into double figures, scoring 12 points.

Perryville led from the second quarter on, but had to hold off a Notre Dame rally in the closing minutes. The Lady Pirates led 23-15 at halftime and took a 29-21 lead into the fourth quarter. Notre Dame had a chance to tie the game with a free throw with 10 seconds left, but misfired.

Tournament play continues today. Perryville meets Farmington and Notre Dame takes on St. Pius.

Kelly 52, Delta 41

DELTA -- After starting its season opener off slowly, the Lady Hawks offense found high gear.

Delta led 7-5 after one quarter, but Kelly outscored the Lady Bobcats 16-4 in the second quarter for a 21-11 lead. The Lady Hawks then turned the offense up another notch, scoring 23 points in the third quarter for a commanding 44-20 lead.

Marissa Essner netted 19 points for Kelly and Audrey Burford added 12.

Kristen Fish, 14 points, Amanda Cook, 12, and Amanda Hester, 11, were all in double figures for Delta.

Boys basketball

Leopold 64, Meadow Heights 36

LEOPOLD -- Last season Leopold didn't win its first game until January. This season the Wildcats are already 1-0 as they routed visiting Meadow Heights Monday night.

Adam Horrell led Leopold with 19 points and three 3-pointers. Brian Holzum added 14 and Jason Vandeven contributed 10. The Wildcats led 34-15 at halftime.

J.D. Brune's 16 points paced Meadow Heights.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Notre Dame Tournament

Notre Dame rolled past Charleston 64-49 Monday as its tournament got under way.

Mark Rubel led Notre Dame with 19 points while Jonathan Ressel had 18 and Michael Hoffman 11.

Other first-round games saw Sikeston beat Cape Central 39-34, Poplar Bluff defeat Jackson 62-48 and Blytheville knock off Farmington 58-52

Jonathan Ayers and Corey Lewis both scored 10 points for Cape Central while Jackson got 16 from Brad Hilbert and 13 from Caleb Daniel.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Central Tournament

Cape Central routed Sikeston 53-16 Monday in the first round of its own tournament. Tricia Klipfel had 17 points.

Other first-round games saw Notre Dame pound New Madrid 44-19, Jackson down Farmington 51-35 and Poplar Bluff beat Perryville 46-27.

Scott City Tournament

Chaffee defeated St. Vincent 38-35 in a first-round game.

Morgan Kiefer paced Chaffee with 19 points and Jodi Pfefferkorn added 11 points and nine rebounds.

JR. HIGH BASKETBALL

Central teams split

SIKESTON -- Cape Central's freshmen downed Sikeston 46-35 while the eighth grade lost 54-30 to open the season Monday.

Jordan White had 12 points and Elliott Swoboda 11 for the freshmen. Anthony Harris scored 11 for the eighth grade.
