CHESTER, Ill. -- Perryville's boys, the No. 5 seed, beat seventh-seeded New Athens 55-38 for the Chester Invitational title Saturday night.

Perryville, state ranked in Class 3A and 16-1, held New Athens to only six points in the first half. It was Perryville's third tournament title of the season. The Pirates won the Woodland Tournament and the MICDS Tournament.

"We were able to take them out of their offense," said Perryville coach Rick Francis. "We dominated them on the boards."

Perryville's Bruce Weinkein led all scorers with 20 points, Scott Kassel added 18 and Matt Meyr finished with 12. Kassel had 13 rebounds and six blocks and Weinkein had 12 rebounds.

Weinkein, Kassel and Meyr all made the all-tournament team.

It was the first time a team from outside of Illinois won the 35th annual event.
