DENVER -- Cardinals right-hander Brad Penny was sent back to St. Louis after experiencing tightness in his injured right arm during a bullpen session Tuesday.
Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa said Penny experienced tightness in his triceps and lat muscle when he got on the mound to throw a simulated game. Penny was sent to St. Louis to be examined.
LaRussa added the setback was "a big negative. It is what it is but you can't belabor it because it's not good for the club."
Penny was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain May 22. He is 3-4 with a 3.23 ERA in nine starts this season.
