In the midst of the Poplar Bluff Mules football season coming to an end, a new group of players took the field at Mules Stadium on Tuesday.
The Poplar Bluff High School Student Council hosted its annual Powderpuff game, allowing the girls to step onto the football field for a good cause.
Every year, the student council raises money from the game to buy Christmas presents for Haven House, which provides shelter & advocacy services for domestic violence victims and their children.
The game consisted of a four-team tournament where the freshman faced off against the sophomores while the seniors took on the juniors for a chance to be crowned the 2023 Powderpuff champs.
PBHS Stuco Vice President Grace Neighbors, who’s big on involving the school in the community, said she was excited to host the event this year and enjoyed seeing everyone come out to support their cause.
“We’ve been doing this game ever since I joined my freshman year, and it’s been something we all like,” Neighbors said. “Each year, our council goes out and buys the presents for the families at Haven House, and we have a really fun time every time. Those families at Haven House deserve to have the same kind of Christmas everyone else does, so it feels great to accomplish that every year.”
The freshmen beat the sophomores 8-2, and the seniors beat the juniors 8-0 in the semifinals. The seniors would stand tall in the end to win the tournament with a 3-0 win over the freshmen class.
Jennie Randolph, the PBHS student council advisor, said the powderpuff game is one of their favorite events because it ensures that children will have a gift on Christmas morning. She applauds all the girls who chose to participate every year because of what it stands for and what it supports.
“It’s really important that we are emphasizing what really matters with kids, especially today,” Randolph said. “Our goal is to show our kids the importance of empathy, caring for others and going out of their way to support someone else, even when it’s a hard time. That’s what’s most important for us as a community to emphasize with our kids how great it is to give back.”
