St. Vincent football coach Paul Sauer decided to make a drastic change to his lineup.

After watching his team drop its first four games, Sauer decided each player would play either offense or defense, but not both.

The switch paid off in Sauer's first win in his return to the St. Vincent sideline.

The Indians knocked off host St. Pius 27-14 on Friday.

"I think right now, if we keep getting kids to step up and fill those positions and if we're able to keep fresher legs on the field, I think that's going to be a big advantage for us as we go through the season," Sauer said.

The Indians' difference-maker was running back C.J. Pavlovsky. The senior carried the ball 40 times for 246 yards and two scores.

"We were able to run the football real effectively," Sauer said.

Pavlovsky scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards.

"We played everybody just one way," Sauer said. "Then at different times we'd let them go in if they, like C.J., played a little on defense. ... The majority of the time he was just running the football. It seemed like that really helped us to keep everyone in the game and keep us with a little fresher legs on both sides of the ball."

The Indians (1-4) also effectively moved the ball through the air. Sophomore quarterback Tim Schumer completed 6 of his 14 attempts for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

Kyle Rollet hauled in all six passes. One scoring strike covered 15 yards while the other TD went for 10 yards.
