It took until about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, but a champion was finally crowned in the Cape Girardeau SEMO Bank Junior American Legion Tournament.
After rain wiped out Saturday's action, the six teams in the round-robin baseball tourney had to perform extra duty Sunday.
Eight games were played Sunday, with a strong squad from Paducah, Ky., emerging as the champion. Paducah's 12-5 win over Chaffee late Sunday night gave the Kentuckians a 5-0 tournament record.
Host Cape SEMO Bank and Chaffee both finished 3-2, with Cape earning the second-place nod by virtue of an earlier tourney win over Chaffee.
Imperial went 2-3 and finished fourth while CBC of Memphis, Tenn., also went 2-3 for fifth. Kirkwood brought up the rear at 1-4.
"Overall we had a good tournament," said Cape coach Steve Williams. "The rain set us back Saturday but we were finally able to play all the games."
Cape improved its record to 12-9 by winning two games Sunday, pounding Kirkwood 16-2 and Imperial 11-3.
Josh McIntosh was the winning pitcher against Kirkwood. He also had three hits while Mark Fisher led the way with four of Cape's 17 hits.
Mark Ostendorf notched the victory against Imperial. Ty Fidler, Justin Welker and Chad Jones all had two of Cape's 11 hits.
Chaffee, in addition to losing to Paducah, defeated Memphis CBC 4-3 in earlier action Sunday.
