ATLANTA, Ga. -- After nearly pulling off a stunning upset Friday night, Southeast Missouri State University's softball team came back Saturday and posted its first victory in the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.
The Otahkians, who lost 5-4 to California -- the nation's third-ranked squad -- Friday night after earlier falling to No. 22 Wisconsin 9-0 earlier in the day, knocked off Mercer 2-1 Saturday.
Southeast (6-11) wrapped up tourney play later Saturday against Harvard, but no results were available.
Kristen King was the winning pitcher against Mercer while Jenny Doehring had game's biggest hit, a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
Friday night against a California squad that entered the game with a 33-1 record, the Otahkians led 4-1 after a three-run homer by Reagan Hamlin in the third inning. That advantage stood up until the Bears rallied with four runs in the sixth.
The Otahkians will open Ohio Valley Conference play Wednesday by hosting Austin Peay.
