Otahkians drop two to St. Louis

Southeast Missouri State University's softball team completed its non-conference schedule Tuesday afternoon by dropping both ends of a doubleheader at St. Louis University.

The Otahkians fell to 5-20 after 2-1 and 6-4 losses. The opener went eight innings.

The Billikens are 13-24.

In the first game, Southeast had 10 hits but managed just one run. Jamie Birk, Stephanie Mata and Melissa VanVelkinburgh all had two hits. Kelly Birk allowed five hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings for the loss.

Southeast had seven hits in the second game, led by Kelly Birk with two. VanVelkinburgh gave up two runs in just one-third of an inning for the loss.

The Otahkians begin Ohio Valley Conference play Thursday with a 3 p.m. home doubleheader against Eastern Illinois.

Two-day SEMO Cup competition concludes

Southeast's SEMO Cup competition against Tennessee-Martin ended Tuesday at Kimbeland Country Club in Jackson. No team scores were kept.

The two-day, 54-hole, Ryder Cup-style event featured 18 holes of scramble and 18 holes of alternate shot on Monday, followed by 18 holes of best ball Tuesday.

Scott Carpenter and Andy McNeil of UT-Martin finished first with a score of 205.

Southeast's tandems of Matt Hillis-Brandon Couch and Mark Schmitz-Zack Decker tied for second at 208, with Hillis-Couch getting the nod on a scorecard playoff.

Southeast's Kent Phillips and Brian Sheehan were fourth (212), followed by UT-Martin's Hunter Prescott and Andy Bell (214).

"It was purely designed for the two-man teams to have a little fun, do things a little different, and break the spring monotony of the normal tournaments," Southeast coach Carroll Williams said. "I thought it went very well."

Southeast tennis falls at Austin Peay

Southeast Missouri State lost 7-0 to Austin Peay on Tuesday night in Clarksville, Tenn.

The Otahkians fell to 1-19 overall and 1-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Austin Peay improved to 4-13 overall and 1-4 in the OVC.
