He scored more than 60 goals over his final two varsity seasons, set the school goal-scoring record and led his team to its highest finish in the program's history.

On Wednesday, Central senior Heath Orr signed with the University of Central Arkansas to continue his soccer career. Orr finished his career with 71 goals, with 65 of those coming in his final two seasons. The Tigers lost to eventual state champion SLUH in overtime of the state semifinals last fall, ending with a fourth-place finish.

Orr will now try to continue his goal-scoring ways for the Bears, an NCAA Division II program based in Conway, Ark.

Conference tournaments abound

Conference tournament week is invading Southeast Missouri this week.

Whether area high school sports fans are in the mood for baseball, track, golf or swimming, there is a conference tournament to check out.

The SEMO Conference baseball tournament will continue today with quarterfinal and semifinal action scheduled at Central, Notre Dame and Capaha Park. The finals are tentatively set for Tuesday at Capaha at a time to be determined.

Two SEMO Conference track meets are set for Friday, and the Jefferson County Conference meet takes place Wednesday and Thursday at Herculaneum.

Central and Jackson will take part in the SEMO Conference meet 4 p.m. Friday at the Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex.

Notre Dame will compete at the SEMO Central Conference meet 4 p.m. Friday at Charleston.

Golf gets into the act with Perryville and St. Vincent playing in the Jefferson County Conference meet on Thursday at Farmington.

Finally, Central and Notre Dame will be joined by Poplar Bluff in the second Show Me Conference swimming meet on Friday. Notre Dame will host the meet at the Central Municipal Pool.

Slattery signs with Alabama school

Central senior Patrick Slattery, the Tigers' leading hitter this season, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Last season Slattery hit .375 with two home runs and 23 RBIs. Slattery built on those numbers last summer with nine home runs and 39 RBIs to go along with a .377 average playing for the Cape Girardeau American Legion team.

Alabama-Huntsville, an NCAA Division II school, is ranked 12th in the latest Collegiate Baseball top 25 poll.

Poplar Bluff star narrows college choices

Poplar Bluff basketball star Tyler Hansbrough, a 6-foot-8 junior, told the Daily American Republic he has narrowed his choices to five schools and will select his college by July.

Hansbrough will choose between North Carolina, Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky and Florida.
