Oran boys basketball team uses early blitz to claim third place in own tournament

ORAN, Mo -- It didn't take the Oran boys basketball team long to bounce back from Thursday's disappointing loss.

Oran blitzed Malden 26-4 during the first quarter and rolled 82-63 in Friday night's third-place game of the 57th annual Oran Invitational.

That helped ease some of the sting from the previous night's semifinal, when the second-seeded Eagles fell by 15 points to rival Advance.

"It was very disappointing, a tough loss like that against a big-time rival," Oran senior Alex Heuring said. "We didn't come out ready to play. Coach got into us. We had to show what kind of team we are tonight."

The Eagles (2-1) especially showed it during an opening period that put the fifth-seeded Green Wave (1-2) into a hole they could not climb out of.

Malden led 4-3 in the early going but went the final six-plus minutes of the first quarter without a point.

Oran closed the period on a 23-0 run. Senior Kody Moore did the most damage for the Eagles, hitting four 3-pointers on his way to 14 first-quarter points.

"We came back tonight and I felt like we had intensity for the most part," Moore said. "The big lead got us momentum."

Moore stayed hot most of the game. He hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 25 points.

That came after Moore scored just seven points and the Eagles did not make a 3-pointer in the semifinal against Advance. Oran had nine 3-pointers Friday.

"I don't know where it was the other night. It's a big part of our game," Moore said of hitting from beyond the arc. "I wanted to prove to myself I could make shots. I sure wasn't going to stop shooting."

While Moore burned Malden from the outside, Heuring damaged the Green Wave from in close.

The 6-foot-4 Heuring, several inches taller than any Malden player, bullied his way to 21 points and 20 rebounds. Several of his baskets came on stick-backs.

"He had a really good game," Oran coach Joe Shoemaker said. "We came out with a lot more pride and intensity defensively. And we shot the ball well."

Junior Chance Tenkhoff added 16 points for the Eagles.

Senior Malik Perkins paced Malden with 26 points.

Sophomore Cortez Dobbins added 20 points for the Green Wave but Oran, led by sophomore Hunter Schlosser, did a solid job defending Malden's star.

Dobbins, who poured in 70 points during the Green Wave's first two tournament games, was scoreless in Friday's opening quarter.

The Eagles were ahead 39-26 at halftime and 60-43 after three quarters.

"It was good to bounce back," said Moore after the Eagles finished third in their own tournament for the second straight year.

Consolation final Chaffee 68, Kelly 59

Fourth-seeded Chaffee rallied past sixth-seeded Kelly behind a 15-0 fourth-quarter run that turned the game around.

The Red Devils (3-1) trailed 50-45 entering the final period before outscoring the Hawks (1-2) 23-9.

"We switched up our defense in the fourth quarter and started to get some stops," Chaffee coach Josh Govreau said.

Chaffee scored 15 straight points to begin the final period. Kelly went scoreless for the first five minutes.

Junior Storm Estes' only basket of the game, a 3-pointer, pulled Chaffee into a 50-50 tie.

Junior Charlie Montgomery's layup with 6 minutes, 7 seconds left gave the Red Devils a 52-50 lead and they never looked back.

Sophomore point guard Peyton Montgomery paced Chaffee with 27 points. Charlie Montgomery had 14 and junior Jimmy Golden added 10.

Kelly was led by junior Gaven Ray 20 with 20 points. Senior Gabe Felter scored 13 and junior Josh Roberts added 10.

"To get two wins out of any tournament is good for us," Govreau said.
