OXFORD, Miss. -- In a game that featured just eight hits, a base-loaded walk proved to be Southeast's undoing in a 1-0 loss to Mississippi on Saturday.
The fifth-inning walk to Lance Jones forced in the game's only run as Southeast (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season. Ole Miss improved to 5-1. The run was unearned and made a loser of Southeast starter Tommy Thomas, who allowed just two hits in five innings of work.
In the decisive inning, Thomas struck out the leadoff man but allowed a single to Matt Tolbert, one of just three Ole Miss hits on the day. A.J. Cochet then reached on an error by Indian shortstop Zach Borowiak. Thomas then obtained the second out of the inning on a strikeout, but then walked the next two batters -- Kris Cox and Jones -- to force in the run.
Southeast had five hits on the game, including two by leadoff man Clemente Bonilla. However, Ole Miss starter Pete Montrenes, the winner, struck out 10 Indians in six innings. Nathan Lyons relieved Montrenes in the seventh and pitched three innings of two-hit ball, striking out three additional Indians.
Smith and Hilz pitched three innings of one-hit relief for Southeast.
