OXFORD, Miss. -- Mississippi scored four runs in the fourth inning as its snapped Southeast Missouri's eight-game winning streak with a 5-1 victory Friday evening.
Ole Miss hurlers Jeff McAvoy and Goodwin combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed just five Indian hits.
McAvoy, the starter and winner, allowed four hits in five innings while Goodwin prevented any Indian rally with one-hit relief over the final four innings.
Southeast, which opened the season with a pair of losses, had won its previous eight games.
Southeast scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and carried the lead into the decisive fourth. After Jude Voltz opened the inning with a double, left-fielder Craig Nugen gave Ole Miss (9-3) the lead for good with a two-run homer. The Rebels' first six batters in the inning reached safely as Indian starter Dan Huesgen gave way to Jeffrey Hilz. Burney Hutchison touched Huesgen for a two-run single before he was lifted. Hilz escaped further damage by invoking a couple pop outs with the bases loaded. Mississippi led 4-1 after the inning and added its final run in the sixth.
Huesgen allowed nine hits in three innings and suffered the loss. Hilz gave up four hits in 2 2-3 innings and Tommy Thomas finished up with 2 1-3 innings of one-hit relief.
Clemente Bonilla, Charlie Marino, Jeff Bourbon, Zach Borowiak and Denver Stuckey all had one hit for the Indians.
Chad Hill was 3-for-3 for Ole Miss, which had 14 hits, while Nugen, Clint Farrar and Banks Robinson had two hits apiece.
The two team return to action today for a 2 p.m. contest.
