BENTON - Kim Essner scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to lead Class 2A's ninth-ranked Kelly Lady Hawks to a 20-point win over Charleston at home Monday.

Essner held Kelly jump out to an 18-point lead at the break as the Lady Hawk post controlled the offensive glass for Kelly in the first two periods, finishing the game with seven offensive rebounds.

"She did a good job on the boards tonight," said kelly coach Clay Vangilder. "We controlled the inside pretty well."

Kelly finished off the Lady Jays with a 21-point fourth quarter as Wendy Wooldridge scored 10 of her 14 points in the final period.

Emily Glastetter also was a big part in the win, pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds.

Kelly, now 18-5, has a well-deserved break until next Monday when they travel to Portageville.

"We played like a team that's worn out," Vangilder said. "That (Charleston) tournament really took it out of us."

OAK RIDGE 56; LEOPOLD 50 (BOYS)

LEOPOLD - Oak Ridge broke open a close game with a big third quarter and went on to a six-point win over Leopold on the road here Monday.

The Blue Jays, 5-12, led 21-18 at the half, but upped the edge to 13 by the fourth quarter using a pressing defense to break the game open.

"We didn't handle their trap well," said Leopold coach Greg Hamm. "They changed the momentum of the game with that."

Leopold, now 2-15, got as close as two in the final quarter, but never could overtake the Jays, who were led by Charlie Fowler's 18 points.

Ambrose Peters led Leopold in defeat with 21 while Andy Beussink had 10.
