SCOTT CITY -- When Nathan McGuire is not on the mound, Notre Dame is not much more than a .500 baseball team this season.
But luckily for the Bulldogs, McGuire has pitched seven games this season -- and has won every one.
In a key Class 2A district game Thursday, Notre Dame beat Scott City on the road 3-0 and in all likelihood locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming district tournament.
McGuire went all seven innings, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking only one.
Notre Dame improved to 11-3. Scott City fell to 8-2.
"This was a big district game; its always nice to beat a team two weeks before you probably play them in the district tournament," said Notre Dame coach Gregg Muench.
"Nathan didn't strike out as many as he usually does, but he was right around the plate. When you walk only one batter that will keep you in a lot of ballgames."
Notre Dame scored a run in the first inning and two in the third. In the first, Danny Wittenborn singled, stole second and scored on a single by McGuire.
In the third, Wittenborn singled, took second on an error and stole third. Josh Eftink drew a walk and Trent Summers came through with a triple to score Wittenborn and Eftink.
Notre Dame will play Eureka (Mo.) at 4 p.m. today at Capaha Park in the Big 8 Tournament.
Advance 9, Bloomfield 8
BLOOMFIELD -- Chris Wallace hit two home runs and squelched a Bloomfield rally in the seventh inning to earn a save in relief as Advance emerged victorious.
Wallace went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Chance White and Garrett Broushuis also hit home runs for Advance (8-4). Broushuis, the winning pitcher, had three hits and three RBIs.
Trailing 4-3, the Hornets scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 9-4 advantage. Advance took the five-run lead into the bottom of the seventh and saw Bloomfield hit a pair of two-run homers with nobody out. Wallace was summoned and recorded the final three outs, striking out one and not allowing a hit.
