Notre Dame tops Scott City in 2A, District 2 final

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Notre Dame played through several injuries and won its second straight Class 2A, District 2 volleyball championship, defeating Scott City 15-3, 8-15, 15-8 Tuesday night.

"Our two middle hitters, Deana McCormick and Jen VanGennip, both had injuries and played great," Notre Dame coach Helen Payne said. "And Courtney Vickery would just not let us lose. All our seniors got to play and they all played real hard. I was very proud of them.

Notre Dame (24-8-1) downed Bloomfield 15-2, 15-7 in the semifinal.

Scott City, which defeated No. 3 seed Twin Rivers 7-15, 15-4, 15-5 in the semifinal, got seven kills from Amanda O'Brien and three from Sidney Baer in the championship match. Megan Ressel scored 20 service points.

"I was very pleased and very proud," Scott City coach Barbara Ice said. "They fought all the way to the very end and played a good match."

The Lady Rams ended their season at 16-12-1.

Notre Dame advances to Saturday's four-team sectional in Bloomfield.

Class 1A, District 2

BELL CITY, Mo. -- Bernie claimed the championship with a 10-15, 15-9, 15-8 victory over Bell City.

The Lady Cubs (22-6-1), which defeated Zalma 15-4, 15-11 in the semifinals, received 14 kills, 16 digs and 12 service points from Katie Spears in the championship match. Katie Niemczyk added nine kills, 20 digs and seven points. Whitney Abner posted 22 assists and Amanda Bailey had 10 digs.

"It was a real good match," Bell City coach Carl Ritter said. "We made some mistakes in the second game that really hurt us. It was one of those matches where you hate to see either team lose."

Bernie knocked off Richland 15-0, 15-5 in the other semifinal.

Class 1A, District 4

PATTON, Mo. -- Trailing 11-2 in the third set, top-seeded Meadow Heights rallied to beat No. 2 Leopold for the district championship in a battle that pitted two of the best volleyball teams in the area.

With the season on the line, senior Jamie Heitman -- who has been out most of the year with an injury -- served seven straight points and got the Lady Panthers (27-4) back into the game.

"It was crazy," Meadow Heights coach Erin Hoffman said. "I wish we would've counted to see how many people came. It was a real good match."

Meadow Heights was led by Hanna James (11 kills, 20 digs), Tessa Bollinger (10 kills, 12 digs), Holly Boyd (five kills, 20 digs, four stuff-blocks) and Ashley Burne (five kills, eight digs.)

Leopold dropped to 23-4-1.

Class 2A, District 1

PIEDMONT, Mo. -- Woodland's season came to a resounding halt, falling in a no-doubter 15-3, 15-1 loss to host Clearwater in the semifinals.

Sarah Davenport led Woodland with six digs, while Kelly Reed had five. Emily Davis led the Lady Cardinals (7-20) with two kills.

Class 3A, District 1

DEXTER, Mo. -- No. 3 seed Perryville fell to No. 2 Dexter 6-15, 16-14, 5-15 in the semifinals of the district tournament.

Dexter advanced to play top-seeded Fredericktown, a winner over New Madrid, in the final.

Perryville, which finished its season at 10-15-1, received eight kills, seven blocks and seven digs from Katie Kutz. Cindy Rhyne added seven digs and seven service points while Jaime Hacker had four kills and six blocks.

Adam Prasanphanich scored two goals and Scott Wittenborn added a goal and an assist as the Bulldogs ended their regular season with a 15-4-2 record.

Prasanphanich scored Notre Dame's first goal on an assist from Wittenborn and rifled the Bulldogs' last goal home from about 12-15 yards out.

Wittenborn headed in a goal off a free kick from Matt Pobst.

JACKSON 10, FARMINGTON 0

JACKSON, Mo. --Michael Schuette scored three goals and added an assist, and Patrick Kohm scored one goal and had five assists, as the Indians ripped Farmington.

Matt Neal (two goals, two assists), Stewart Knowlan (two goals) Balraj Dirnberger (one goal), Jeffrey Beck (one goal) and Matt Buttry (one assist) all added to Jackson's scoring.

Goalkeeper Austin McDowell recorded the shutout as Jackson improved to 12-8.
