SCOTT CITY -- Notre Dame High's volleyball team staged a furious second-game rally and went on to post a thrilling victory host Scott City Monday night.
The Lady Bulldogs lost the first game 15-7 and trailed 10-4 in the second game. But they stormed back to prevail 15-12 and then squeezed out a 16-14 win in the third and deciding game.
"We didn't play well the first game and the first part of the second game, but then we decided we wanted to win it," said Notre Dame coach Helen Payne, whose squad is now 4-5-1. "I told the girls that the best thing about it is the way we came back."
Lynne Obermiller led the way in kills with 11, followed by Michelle Hency with six and Amber Elfrink with four. Katie Canfield had 23 assists and served 10 points while Carrie Halter also served 10 points
Notre Dame's JV won 15-8, 7-15, 15-2, the match highlighted by Lisa Millham's 13 consecutive service points.
The Lady Bulldogs host Sikeston tonight.
Jackson 15-15
Poplar Bluff 7-10
POPLAR BLUFF -- Jackson continued its strong start, improving to 11-1-1 with a sweep.
Andrea Koeper led the charge with 10 kills, while Jennifer Mesey had eight kills and six aces. Sarah Biri finished with 13 assists.
Jackson's JV improved to 6-2 with a 15-7, 15-7 victory.
The Lady Indians visit Cape Central tonight.
Sikeston 15-9-15
Cape Central 6-15-1
SIKESTON -- Sikeston dominated the third and deciding game as the Lady Tigers fell to 2-6.
Central coach Debra Spinner credited Tara Duncan with a solid performance.
The Lady Tigers also dropped JV and freshmen matches, 15-5, 15-11 (JV) and 15-12, 15-13 (freshmen).
Central hosts Jackson tonight.
Woodland 15-15
Bell City 4-7
MARBLE HILL -- Woodland improved to 9-1 by posting an easy victory.
Jessica Bollinger led the Lady Cardinals with eight kills while Sarah Booth had five and Lilo Whitener added four. Booth also came up with five digs. Julia Cutsinger distributed eight assists and Danyel Farrell served seven points.
Woodland's JV prevailed 15-11, 15-11.
SOFTBALL
Notre Dame 15, Sikeston 4
Notre Dame evened its record at 6-6 by pounding out a five-inning, run-rule victory.
Ramona Blankenship pitched all five innings, allowing four hits while striking out five and walking three.
The Lady Bulldogs had nine hits, led by Sarah Berkbigler with three. Laura Huber and Traci Kluesner both added two hits.
Notre Dame's JV also romped, 17-2. Amy Young got the win.
The Lady Bulldogs host Goreville, Ill., today.
Perryville 14, Crystal City 3
PERRYVILLE -- The Lady Pirates are now 6-6 after winning in five innings.
Perryville had eight hits, led by Amanda Schumer and Rachel Verseman with two each. Schumer also drove in three runs.
Megan Narrow was the winning pitcher.
Kelly 12, St. Vincent 1
PERRYVILLE -- Kelly took advantage of a nine-run third inning as the Lady Hawks claimed a five-inning triumph.
Natalie Lewer was the winning pitcher while Jessica Kirn took the loss.
The Lady Hawks had 12 hits, led by Jenny Riley and Audrey Burford with three each. Megan Beggs belted a home run.
St. Vincent had six hits, Kirn and Kindle Ernst getting two apiece.
The Lady Indians visit Hillsboro today.
GIRLS TENNIS
Cape Central 9, Kennett 0
KENNETT -- The Lady Tigers remained undefeated in dual matches at 4-0 by posting a shutout victory.
Central also won all 15 JV matches that were played.
The Lady Tigers have a big contest today as they host Jackson.
