Never mind about the unstoppable force meeting the impenetrable object. Tuesday's consolation bracket game between Chaffee and Notre Dame at the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament was more like the gang that couldn't shoot straight running into a team that likes to play defense.

The result was a 65-18 victory for Notre Dame, which advanced to today's noon consolation semifinal game against Woodland. Meadow Heights and Delta will play in the other consolation semifinal at 1:30 p.m.

Notre Dame never allowed more than six points in any one period and scored the game's first 15 points before Chaffee's Jeff Daugherty hit a 3-pointer more than 5 minutes into the contest.

"We have to be good defensively," Notre Dame coach Paul Hale said, "because we struggle shooting the ball. That's the way we have to play. When we shoot well, we can be competitive."

The Bulldogs (4-6) knocked down seven 3-pointers, just one shy of Chaffee's field goal total for the game.

Kirk Boeller hit three 3s and scored 11 points, while John Eric Klein added two 3s and scored 11 points.

Chaffee (2-6) was led by Tyler Graham's nine points. The Red Devils, who already have doubled last year's win total for the season, scored only 17 points in a tournament loss Monday against top-seeded Jackson.

"We're doing some good things," Chaffee coach Tyson Moyers said. "The ball just won't go in the hole. We just don't have that confidence shooting right now. Notre Dame has more talent than us, and Jackson has more talent than us. When you're going up against that, all you can do is play with heart, and we did that."
