POTOSI -- Nathan McGuire continued his pitching domination of area baseball teams during Friday's action in the Potosi round-robin tournament.McGuire, a Notre Dame High senior who has been the area's top hurler so far this season, raised his personal record to 6-0 as the Bulldogs rolled past Jackson 10-2.Notre Dame, which improved to 8-1, played Pacific late Friday night. No score was reported as the Missourian went to press.Jackson lost its other tourney game Friday, falling to Potosi 6-3. The Indians are now 6-5.The four-team tournament will conclude today. Jackson takes on Pacific at 10 a.m. and Notre Dame plays Potosi at 2 p.m.McGuire allowed five hits in hurling all seven innings. He got offensive support from freshman Josh Eftink, who belted a three-run homer during Notre Dame's big nine-run second inning that broke the game open. Ryan LeGrand had a two-run single in the second.Danny Wittenborn and Trent Summers both had two of Notre Dame's seven hits.Jason Goben pitched a complete game in suffering the loss. Travis Stevens led the Indians with two hits.In Jackson's loss to Potosi, Chris Leimer hurled a complete game for the Indians, allowing eight hits. Justin Gladish and Mike Gross both had two of Jackson's seven hits.
Kelly 2, Chaffee 1BENTON -- Denver Stuckey pitched a two-hitter as Kelly slipped past visiting Chaffee Friday.Stuckey, who improved to 3-1, struck out 12, walked three and allowed only an unearned run in the third inning.Chaffee (5-7) hurler Jeremy Yarbro was also impressive. He gave up one earned run and five hits while fanning five and walking three.Kelly (6-4) trailed 1-0 until the fifth, when it took the lead for good with two runs, the second scoring on an error. Ben Klipfel had two of the Hawks' hits.Chaffee will be right back in action today, hosting Ann-Jonesboro, Ill., in a 10 a.m. doubleheader. Kelly will host Jackson Monday.
SoftballKelly 8, Chaffee 3BENTON -- Kelly improved to 10-0 as the Lady Hawks prevailed Friday in a battle of unbeatens.Kim Riley allowed three first-inning runs but then blanked the visiting Lady Red Devils the rest of the way. She gave up six hits while fanning five and walking one.Jamie Duncan gave up eight hits as she suffered the loss.Riley also had two hits for Kelly. Tiffany Glastetter had two hits and drove in three runs, Ashley Beggs added two RBIs and Jennifer McNeill belted a home run."It was a real good game," said Kelly coach Rhonda Evans. "Kim settled down and pitched very well."Both squads will return to action Tuesday, Chaffee hosting Dexter and Kelly visiting East Prairie.
St. Pius 5, Notre Dame 4FESTUS -- Notre Dame allowed four unearned runs and fell to St. Pius on the road Friday.Jill Huber took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs (3-4). She allowed six hits while fanning three and walking one.Raelin Miller had three of Notre Dame's nine hits.The Lady Bulldogs will play at New Madrid Monday.
Scott City 6, Sikeston 1SCOTT CITY -- Amy O'Brien collected three hits and three RBIs as Scott City defeated visiting Sikeston Friday.The Lady Rams had eight hits overall in boosting their record to 7-1.Heather Miller recorded the victory, allowing six hits, striking out 10 and walking two.The Lady Rams scored a run in the first, three in the second and two in the fourth for a 6-0 lead.Scott City will visit Charleston Tuesday.
