CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Notre Dame High's soccer team picked up a victory Tuesday afternoon in most exciting fashion.

Matt Pobst put in a shot with only two seconds remaining in regulation play to lift the Bulldogs to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Carbondale (Ill.) Terriers.

Pobst, who normally plays a defensive role for the Bulldogs, was sent up to attack with the rest of his teammates during a throw-in. His left-footed shot hit the cross-bar and bounced down over the goal line. Shane Kistner earned the assist.

"Matt was a very unlikely hero," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn, whose squad improved to 8-1. "He normally wouldn't even be up there, but we knew time was running down, so we moved everybody up.

"It has to be exciting for Matt and everybody was real excited for him because he's a real good kid."

Carbondale won the JV game 2-1. Adam Prasanphanich scored the goal for Notre Dame, which fell to 3-2-1.
