NORTHWEST, KIRKWOOD DOMINATE JACKSON INV.

JACKSON -- Area cross country teams got a good chance to look at the competition early in the season Saturday at the Jackson Invitational held at Jackson City Park.

And according to the results of the class-divided meet, Northwest of House Springs should be strong again on the boys side, while the girls' defending 4A state champion Kirkwood may stand a good chance to repeat.

Northwest won the junior, sophomore and freshman divisions. Perryville prevented a sweep by winning the senior division.

The seniors, juniors and sophomores covered a 2.35-mile course while the freshmen ran a 1.95-mile layout. The top four finishes among the boys accounted for the team score while the girls scores were determined by the placement of the top three finishers. The top 10 in all classes received medals.

Cape Central's boys took second in the senior division, paced by a third-place finish by Jonathan Anderson.

Also for Central, Mark Stone finished first in the sophomore division.

On the girls side, Kirkwood won the senior, junior and sophomore divisions. Cape Central's girls broke the trend by placing first in the freshman division.

Jackson's senior girls placed second as Sarah Stiegmeyer (4th) , Sarah Strack (9th) and Jennifer Brown (10th) all medaled.

A total of 18 teams particapted in the meet.
