The Northwest of House Spring boys cross country team repeated their last year's performance by taking advantage of the cool, dry weather to win the Cape Central Invitational Saturday at Cape County Park-North.

"Northwest is usually the team to beat in boys and look like the team to beat again in the district this year," said Cape Central coach Mark Hahn.

Northwest finished with 43 points as host Cape Central, 70 points, finished second among the nine teams.

Devin McCall of Northwest was the top finisher with a time of 14:22, which was only two seconds faster than Carbondale's Chris Ashton. Cory Taylor of Sikeston took third with a time of 14:34. Mark Stone (14:40) of Cape Central was fourth overall.

"I think times overall were a little faster (due to) the combination of the weather being cooler and the course being like asphalt -- it's so hard and dry," said Hahn.

Hahn came away upbeat with his team's performances.

"I thought our team did real well," said Hahn. "Seven races and we took first or second in all but one. We looked strong as a team."

On the girls' side, Fox pulled off a surprise by winning with a 59-point total.

The varsity girls for Jackson and Cape Central looked strong, as well, with Jackson finishing tied with Carbondale for second place with 74 points. Carbondale was fourth with 80.

Fox's finish was a bit of a surprise to Hahn, who anticipated the battle for first to be contested among Cape Central, Jackson and Carbondale.

Cape Central's Lane Thomasson broke the tape in a time of 17:34 in the 2.6-mile varsity race. Julie Wunderlich of Jackson took second in 17:48 and teammate Laura Unverferth was right behind in 17:54.

Cape Central's girls had five medalists in the JV race to win with a 39-point total.
