RISCO, Mo. — The New Madrid County Central baseball finished the regular season with a fury, winning 13-3 at Risco on Thursday, May 11.

The Eagles (8-18) came into the game with something to prove, having struggled with inconsistency throughout the season.

“It's always great to get a win,” said NMCC coach Joseph McClarty. “We had a plan to use three pitchers to prepare us for districts and we were able to execute that plan. We swung it well. Getting the two wins here to finish out the regular season is a big positive and a testament to the players for not giving up and keeping a positive mindset.”

NMCC lead 2-0 after Brady Swims hammered a double into center field that scored BJ Waters and Carson Pfeffer.

The Eagles widened the lead to 6-0 in the top of the third inning after Waters scored on a wild pitch and Ayden McCanless jacked a home run over the left field wall that scored Clay Cope and Swims.

The Tigers (14-16) trimmed the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning, but NMCC answered with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 13-2.

Those runs came after Pfeffer single to score Williams, Pfeffer scored on an error, Cope hit a home run that scored Swims and Chris Grissom had a home run to score McCanless.

Risco added one final run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Swims earned the win on the mound. He pitched 2.1 innings and allowed no earned runs on no hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Cope threw 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and two walks. McCanless pitched one inning and didn’t allow any earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Eagles received the No. 3 seed in the MSHSAA Class 3, District 1 Tournament at Meatte Park in Portageville, Missouri.

NMCC will take on second-seeded Twin Rivers (13-14) on Saturday, May 13 at 3:30 p.m.

“Going into districts everyone is 0-0,” McClarty said. “We are going to show up and give it our best shot. At this time of year, anything can happen.”
