JUPITER, Fla. -- Tony Womack made the most of his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Womack, acquired Sunday from Boston, had two hits and reached base four times Friday in the Cardinals' 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Womack, 34, is among a group of players competing for the starting job at second base. In addition to a pair of singles, he reached twice on errors, scored a run and stole two bases.
"Oh boy, he was exciting," manager Tony La Russa said. "He had terrific at-bats, his blades (legs) looked like they were on fire. He was exciting to watch."
Womack is still recovering from reconstructive surgery on his throwing elbow in January. Though he has played the field in two minor league games since arriving at Cardinals camp, he was the designated hitter Friday.
"I feel fine," Womack said, referring to his elbow. "I don't have any pain there."
Matt Morris pitched six scoreless innings, becoming the first St. Louis pitcher to go that far this spring. He allowed four hits, struck out five and walked none.
"It is all there," Morris said. "Now I just have to repeat it over and over and throw in the right spots."
Hector Luna's RBI single in the fourth gave the St. Louis infielder a team-leading 11 RBIs.
