New Salem opens tourney

New Salem Baptist hosted the Midwest Sports Christmas Classic with five boys and girls teams beginning play on Friday night at New Salem Baptist.

The five teams involved in the two-day tournament include New Salem Baptist, Heartland High School, Peoples Christian, Southern Missouri Christian and Life Christian.

On the boys side of the double elimination tournament, host New Salem went 1-1 on day one. New Salem beat Peoples 46-36 and lost to Heartland 56-51. David Green scored 28 in New Salem's loss to Heartland.

In other boys games, Life beat Southern Missouri 75-63.

On the girls side, New Salem lost its only game, falling to Heartland 68-38. In other games, Peoples beat Southern Missouri and Life beat Peoples.

Sarah Green led New Salem with 18 points.
