Southeast Missouri State faced the nation's highest-scoring college baseball team on the road over the weekend, and the results were not pretty.
New Mexico State pounded the Redhawks during a three-game series in Las Cruces, N.M., It won 9-1 Friday before sweeping Saturday's doubleheader 23-7 and 8-6.
Southeast fell to 7-14 and has lost 10 of its last 12 games. The Aggies, who entered play averaging nine runs per contest, improved to 15-8.
The Redhawks never led during the series that marked the first meeting between the programs.
NMSU outhit the Redhawks 40-28 and took advantage of 27 walks along with nine hit batters by Southeast pitchers. The Aggies issued just four walks and hit only three batters.
Southeast also committed seven errors compared to one for NMSU.
Two of Southeast's senior standouts continued impressive streaks by hitting safely in all three contests.
All-American Trenton Moses has reached base safely in 42 straight games dating back to last year. He also has an 11-game hitting streak. He had six hits, including two home runs, in the series.
Kenton Parmley has a 28-game hitting streak dating back to last season and has reached base safely in 37 straight contests. He had five hits, including a home run, in the series.
Southeast returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Missouri State in a 4 p.m. first pitch.
NMSU scored eight first-inning runs off junior Shae Simmons and romped 23-7 in the opener.
Simmons allowed just three hits in the frame but walked four and hit two batters. The big blows were a three-run homer by Kurt Snowley and a two-run double by Bryan Karraker.
Simmons (0-3), who had his first rough start of the season, lasted just one inning.
Southeast, which trailed 11-0 after three innings, cut the deficit to 12-7 by scoring seven runs during the fourth and fifth innings before NMSU pulled away again.
The Redhawks belted three home runs, while NMSU hit four long balls.
Moses had a solo homer, his team-leading eighth of the season. Parmley and senior Kody Campbell both had three-run shots. It was Campbell's fourth of the year and Parmley's third.
NMSU outhit Southeast 18-12. Moses and Parmley both had three hits.
NMSU jumped out to an early lead for the third time in the series by plating three runs over the first two innings en route to the 8-6 win in the series finale.
Southeast, which trailed 8-1, scored five runs in the ninth inning before the rally fell short.
Junior college transfer left-hander Ryan Kendall, who was making his first Southeast start, allowed four runs and five hits over three innings. He walked six.
Kendall allowed two runs in the first inning despite not giving up a hit. He walked four in the frame, and both runs came in on wild pitches.
The Aggies had the game's only home run while outhitting Southeast 11-9.
Moses, senior Taylor Heon and juco transfer John Logan Zink all had two hits for Southeast. Moses and Zink delivered two RBIs.
True freshman Cody Spanberger fired 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Southeast was dominated by left-hander Ryan Beck during the 9-1 loss.
Beck (3-1), NMSU's ace, struck out nine, allowed five hits and did not issue a walk over seven scoreless innings.
The Redhawks avoided the shutout when Moses led off the ninth inning with the game's only home run.
NMSU broke open the game with a five-run second inning. All the damage came with two outs.
Southeast was outhit 11-7. Juco transfer Ryan Blair led the Redhawks with two hits, including a double.
Sophomore left-hander Christian Hull (2-2) took the loss. He allowed five earned runs and seven hits over five innings. He blanked the Aggies over his final three frames by retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced.
