Notre Dame had two runners apiece finish in the top 10 en route to a first-place finish in the varsity boys race Saturday at the North County Invitational at Mineral Area College in Park Hills.

Notre Dame's Greg Kanneberg won the race with a 18:01, and Austin Critchlow finished seventh in 18:34.

Saxony also had two top-10 runners -- Trey Maevers finished fifth in 18:32 and Brandon Etzold was sixth in 18:33 -- to set the pace for a third-place team finish.

Notre Dame had the only varsity girls full team in the race, and had two top 10 finishes -- Casey Crawford in seventh,and Brooke Beussink in eighth.

VOLLEYBALL Festus Invitational

Notre Dame fell to St. Louis small-school power Visitation 25-17, 25-18 in the championship of the Festus Invitational.

The Bulldogs (25-4-3) won their pool and defeated Windsor 25-18, 20-25, 25-21 to reach the final. In pool play Notre Dame split with Farmington, split with Festus and beat Hillsboro.

Laura Browne led Notre Dame with 19 kills against Windsor, and Amanda Essner added 10. Allison Essner had 22 assists and 14 service points.

Highlights from pool play were 10 kills from Kelsey Scheeter against Farmington, 12 assists from Allison Essner in the Festus match and 11 assists from Amber Karnes against Hillsboro.

MVC tournament

Leopold topped host Oak Ridge 25-22, 26-24 in the final of the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament.

Kelsey Schaper led Oak Ridge with six kills and 12 digs. Whitney Roberts added 18 digs for Oak Ridge, Erin Hahs had six kills and Cynthia Volz had 18 assists.

Meadow Heights beat Zalma 25-18, 25-21 for third place.

JV -- Championship: Leopold beat Meadow Heights, 26-24, 26-24. Third place: Oak Ridge defeated Zalma 25-21, 16-25, 25-17.

OTHER EVENTS

  • The Central freshman football team won 12-10 against Sikeston. Derek Walker and Chase Johnson had rushing toucdowns. Central plays at Jackson on Thursday.
