ND girls turn back Westminster

Jane Morrill posted a double-double and Alex Fowler knocked down four 3-pointers to lift the Notre Dame girls basketball team in a 55-50 victory at Westminster in St. Louis County on Saturday afternoon.

Morrill, a 6-foot junior, had a team-leading 21 points and 15 rebounds in her battle against Westminster's 6-3 junior, Kelly Penning. Penning finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Fowler hit four 3s in her 17-point effort, and Emily Brumitt added a 3-pointer while scoring seven points.

Westminster countered with guards Leah Beck and Sarah Clark. Beck and Clark combined to hit six of 13 3-pointers, as each scored 17 points for Westminster (9-5).

Notre Dame (10-4) built a 31-16 halftime lead.

"The second quarter was brilliant," Notre Dame coach Renee Peters said, "but we were cold in the third quarter and only hit two 3s."

That allowed Westminster to close within 37-32 heading to the final period, but Notre Dame went to the free throw line 18 times in the final stanza and hit 10 to pull off the win. The Bulldogs outscored Westminster 16-2 from the line for the game.

Notre Dame hosts a key SEMO Conference game Monday night against Poplar Bluff.

Cor Jesu 66, Central 37

The Tigers fell behind early at home against Cor Jesu Academy of St. Louis.

The Chargers led by 19 points after one period and 25 by halftime.

Wendi Zickfield led Central (5-7) in defeat with 12. Sadie Pittman added nine and Chelsea Pannier scored eight.

Rachel Henry scored 20 for Cor Jesu (11-4).

The Tigers host Saxony Lutheran on Wednesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL Saxony Lutheran 78, New Athens (Ill.) 64

Chris Roth scored 21 points as Saxony Lutheran defeated New Athens in the championship game of the Chester tournament.

Bryant Steffens hit four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points, Bret Steffens added 14, while Garrett Fritsche and Trevor Mabuce added 11 points apiece.

Mabuce, Bret Steffens and Bryant Steffens were named to the all-tournament team for Saxony, which went 3-0 in the tournament to improve to 14-1.

WRESTLING Jackson places third

The Jackson wrestling team claimed three individual first-place finishes and placed third in the 12-team St. Charles West Invitational.

Jackson's Levi Rayburn nipped Tre Humprey of Francis Howell Central 11-10 in the 103-pound final; Jackson's Justin Darnell won the 189 title with a 3-2 decision against Eureka's Maurice Alexander; and the Indians' Blake Peiffer won at 215 with a 14-4 victory against Liberty's C.J. Hucke.

Doug Froemsdorf (130) and Michael Riney (171) both placed second for Jackson, while Ryan Marble (160) finished third.

Jordan Riesenbichler (112, fourth), Blake Hooe (145, fifth), Adam Kirchdorfer (152, fifth), Chris Hurst (135, sixth) and Edward Englehart (HWT, seventh) turned in top-eight finishes.

Francis Howell Central (418.5) won the team title, followed by Farmington (373) and Jackson (342.5).
