Freshman Rudy McClellan finished 16th in a field of 311 runners to help the Notre Dame boys cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Memphis Twilight Classic on Saturday.
McClellan timed 17 minutes, 3 seconds over the 5K course.
"That's the fastest time we've ever had by a freshman runner," said Notre Dame coach Bill Davis, whose teams annually open their season at the prestigious meet that had 41 teams on the boys side and 33 in the girls competition.
Jacob Meadors (43, 17:49), Michael Peters (58, 18:04), Michael Nelson (59, 18:04) and Brock Kasten (60, 18:05) rounded out Notre Dame's team score of 219.
West Plains won the meet with 17 points, followed by Homewood (Ala.) 106, Houston (Memphis) 216, Bentonville (Ark.) 219 and Notre Dame.
Eureka won the girls competition with 80 points. Notre Dame placed 12th with 350 points.
Freshman Katie Hanners paced Notre Dame with a 67th-place finish in 21:50. She was followed by Ali Norder (74, 21:55), Elsie Anderson (75, 21:55), Maddie Baumgart (82, 22:03) and Jordan Meadors (104, 22:33).
Notre Dame's JV boys placed sixth, while its JV girls were 10th.
Central 8, Hillsboro 6
Mashanda Reed went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs as Central improved to 6-1 on Monday with a road win.
Brooke Anderson added two hits, while winning pitcher Kadie Orenstein had a double.
Orenstein allowed eight hits, four walks and struck out three over five innings. Maggie Groshong pitched the final two innings to record the save.
