The Poplar Bluff Mules’ track and field team left their mark in St. Louis Saturday at the Class 5 District 1 Tournament.

The Poplar Bluff Mules’ track and field team left their mark in St. Louis Saturday at the Class 5 District 1 Meet.

With top competition in attendance, the Mules stamped a spot a the top as the boys edged St. Louis University High to capture first with a composite score of 137, and the girls finished third with an overall score of 119.

“We had a solid performance today,” coach Jeff Mannon said. “I keep telling all the kids to beat their personal bests, and all the other numbers will take care of themselves. As long as I can see them still have a ‘next week’ instead of a ‘next year,’ we’re good to go.”

The Mules made a solid impact in the track competitions as Spencer Nunn placed third in the boy's 110-meter hurdles. At the same time, Samantha Dowd and Koryenna Williams finished first and second in the girl’s 100-meter dash and connected once again as a one-two combo as they finished first and second in the girl’s 200-meter dash.

A'Tari Amos and Kolyn McBride finished 2nd and 3rd in the boy's 100-meter dash, while Caitlin Paumen captured 2nd in the girl's 400-meter dash.

The girl’s relay team of Williams, Dowd, Caitlin Paumen, and McKenzie Cassie finished first in the girl’s 4x200 and 4x100-meter relay. The boy’s relay team of Brandin Dodd, Makel McFarland, Avery Persons and Amos placed 1st in the boy's 4x200-meter relay, and the team of McFarland, McBride, Darius Graham and Amos captured 2nd in the boy’s 4x100-meter relay.

In the field competition, Connor Ray placed first in the boy’s javelin throw, while Adrianne Casey finished second for the girls. Jeridon Young placed second in the boy’s shot put, and Makyra Mead and Casey took first and second for the girls. Graham and Isiah Nevel went first and second in the boy’s high jump, and McKenzie Cassie placed second in the girl’s long jump. Amos and Dodd captured second and fourth in the boy’s long jump to close the tournament.
