Southeast Missouri State junior Frankie Montiel was named the Ohio Valley Conference player of the week Monday for his role in three victories last week.

Montiel hit .600 (9-for-15) with three multiple hit games, including a 4-for-4 performance against Arkansas State in a nonleague win last Tuesday. He was 5-for-11 in the weekend series against Tennessee Tech. Southeast won two of three games in the series.

Montiel was without an error in center field for the week.

He had four doubles to increase his team-leading total to 19. He also extended his hitting streak to five games and is batting .342 for the season.

Four softball players chosen for all-star team

Southeast Missouri State softball players Alana Bagby-Leonard, Jamie Birk, Stacey DeClue and Jessica Hunter all were selected to a Midwest all-star team that will play against the U.S. Olympic team 2 p.m. Saturday at Meador Park in Springfield, Mo.

Southeast coach Lana Richmond and assistant Jeannine Soncini will be part of the all-star team's coaching staff.

All four Southeast players are seniors. Bagby-Leonard was named to the Ohio Valley Conference all-tournament team last weekend after hitting two home runs in the tournament. Birk was a second team all-OVC selection this season after hitting .373 in league play.

Men's basketball team signs juco player

Waylon Francis, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound center from SMS-West Plains signed a letter of intent to attend Southeast Missouri State.

Francis originally is from Freeport in the Bahamas.

He averaged five points and four rebounds per game last season for SMS-West Plains, a two-year school which was 21-7.
