Mizzou, new coach get Bowl-ed over

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Joe Alls scored on a 2-yard run with 3:40 to go as Bowling Green upset Missouri 20-13 Saturday night in the opener for two teams with new coaches.

Missouri was flat in Gary Pinkel's debut, gaining only 71 yards in the first half and 234 overall. Pinkel spent the previous 10 years at Toledo, which beat Bowling Green 51-17 in his final game there before signing a five-year deal at Missouri.

Bowling Green, which hasn't had a winning season since 1994, won a non-conference game on the road to open the season for the first time since 1983. Last year, the Falcons lost their three non-conference games by a combined score of 107-37.

New Bowling Green coach Urban Meyer, 36, coached wide receivers at Notre Dame the past five seasons. He's the second-youngest coach in Division I.

Bowling Green also upset Missouri on the road in 1995.

Missouri quarterback Darius Outlaw threw two interceptions, both by Janssen Patton. Patton's pickoff with 1:37 to go at the Bowling Green 31 clinched the victory.

Alls had 107 yards on 17 carries. Bowling Green needed to go only 35 yards on the winning drive after Patton's first interception of an underthrown ball.

Outlaw, Missouri's starter for at least a week while Kirk Farmer recovers from a broken hand, was 18-for-39 for 158 yards.

Missouri took a 13-7 lead on a 15-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 2-yard pass from Outlaw to Joe Chirumbolo with 12:49 to play. Bowling Green answered immediately with an 80-yard drive to tie it on John Gibson's 5-yard run with 10:07 left.

Cedric Harden blocked the extra point to keep it tied for then.

Missouri's lone score in the first half was a 30-yard field goal by Brad Hammerich to end the first possession. That score was set up when a center snap sailed over the head of Bowling Green quarterback Andy Sahm and he landed on it at the 1.

Bowling Green drove 80 yards on 13 plays for its only score of the half, a 5-yard pass from Andy Sahm to David Bautista with 4:28 to go in the first quarter.

Missouri's Justin Gage caught a career-best nine passes for 118 yards.
