Missouri's late rally fails

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State tried the one-man band approach last game and lost. All its starters were on board Wednesday, and predictably, the results were much better.

Wesley Johnson tied a season-high with 20 points, Jiri Hubalek added 17 points and Iowa State never trailed in beating Missouri 72-67.

Rahshon Clark added a season-high 16 points for the Cyclones and Craig Brackins -- who scored 33 in Iowa State's loss to Baylor in the Big 12 opener -- had 14.

It was the starting five that carried Iowa State. The Cyclones didn't get any points from their bench, but the starters maintained their composure against Missouri's pressure defense and held off the Tigers down the stretch.

The Cyclones held the high-flying Tigers 16 points below their season average and picked up their first Big 12 win.

"This is a great win for us," Iowa State coach Greg McDermott said. "For our guys to come back and turn the tables after really struggling at Baylor is a great victory."

The Tigers (11-6, 1-1 Big 12) made things interesting late. Missouri got within 60-54, the closest it had been since early in the game, on Matt Lawrence's 3 with 3:11 left. Iowa State (11-6, 1-1) jumped back ahead 64-56 on a Johnson layup, but Stefhon Hannah hit a 3 and a layup to bring the Tigers within 64-61 with 43 seconds left.

Marshall Brown threw the ball out of bounds the next time Missouri touched the ball, but he hit a 3 with 3.6 seconds left to keep the Tigers alive. Johnson hit two free throws to seal the win.
