It was a busy Thursday across the Southeast Missourian newspaper coverage area, with one of the area's last undefeateds falling in perhaps the day's top game.

Woodland baseball (2-3) knocked off Bell City (4-1) in a big local matchup, with the Cubs only mustering up one hit in the loss.

Kiren Lindley of Woodland proved a big leader on both ends of the ball, finishing as the game's only multi-hitter while also putting together a staggering performance on the mound.

Scott City baseball (7-1) stayed blazing hot by torching East Prairie on the road, with Lawson Graff's two-hit day leading the way for the Rams.

Mark Panagos put together a solid game at the dish, hitting three singles to provide a sturdy base for the Scott City offense.

Perryville baseball (2-2) made it a second consecutive win on Thursday with a shutout win against Oak Ridge as Troy O'Keefe dominated the mound.

O'Keefe put together a one-hit outing over five innings, helping keep the Pirates hot as they blew by the Bluejays at home.

Oran softball (3-1) made it two consecutive wins in a thrashing of Delta (1-5) on the road, doubling down on a similar performance from Oran baseball (4-2) against the Bobcat baseball (1-6) team.

Both the baseball and softball Eagles won by nearly 20 runs each, cracking down on the less sunny Bobcat programs this season.

The Oran diamond sports continue their strong start to the 2024 season, seemingly having a leg up on most conference competition in the early year.

Meadow Heights baseball (4-3) had one interesting game against Lesterville, throwing seven pitchers for exactly one inning each and holding the Bearcats hitless.

He didn't earn the win, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Caidyn Byrd's four strikeouts in 1.0 innings of work. That's about as rare as it gets.

The Panthers' Braeden Hays again had a day at the plate, driving in two runs on two hits including a double.

Chaffee baseball (8-1) made it two wins in a row with Thursday's hefty defeat of Bloomfield at home, led by Levi McKinnie's four RBIs on two hits, one for a three-run homer.

Scott City softball (4-4) rebounded from back-to-back losses with a solid win against Malden on Thursday.

Mackenzie Lawless had a strong day in the circle, going without an earned run while also doubling for the Rams.

Last, but certainly not least, are the Jackson Indians (6-2), who got the wackiest win of the year thanks to an interesting ruling on Thursday afternoon.

Northwest's Dominic DeBella threw 4.2 innings for Northwest, and with 105 pitches and the game-tying run on second, began a new at-bat and pitched twice to Jackson's Connor Beltz.

A long-referenced MSHSAA rule on pitch count states that no upperclassman pitcher can begin a new at-bat with 105 or more pitches, and the Lions, though barely, passed up this rule.

After a long discussion, the umpires ruled the game a Northwest forfeit and, with Jackson trailing 9-8, gave Jackson the automatic 7-0 victory at home.

Certainly not pretty, but a victory nonetheless for the Indians. Certainly not something you see very often, but you learn something new every day.

Here are the box scores for Thursday's local games.
