Entering the first full week of diamond sports action, a couple of teams had some big shakeups on Monday afternoon, including the first loss of the year for one of the area's premier teams.
Jackson (3-1) jumped out to an early lead over Fort Zumwalt West, but couldn't hold on before suffering a tough loss in the Troy Baseball Classic semifinals.
In softball action, Advance (1-0) got the best of Woodland (0-1) in both teams' season openers despite a ridiculous performance from Woodland's Rhodie Long.
The senior slugger went 4-for-4 at the plate with a quartet of singles. Despite earning the loss on the mound against a hot-hitting Advance squad, she made a big statement in her senior debut.
Meanwhile, for Scott City baseball, a sweet start only got sweeter as the Rams (3-0) went on the road and knocked off Portageville for a top-tier local win between two small-school powers in early-season action.
Junior shortstop Kobe Watson again led his Rams to the win, going 3-for-4 at the dish including a solo homer in the fifth inning to add some insurance.
Scott City pitcher Blake Wilburn pitched the full seven innings in the win, allowing just five hits against one of the area's top squads, punching out eight batters on a 2-earned-run day on the mound.
In the second of two local softball games, Malden escaped a shootout with Leopold (0-1) in the season opener thanks to the loud bat of Kinley Buchanan.
The Green Wave pitcher and first baseman went 3-for-5 at the plate, hitting two doubles and a home run for four RBIs en route to the loud win for Malden.
Chaffee (3-0) kept its hot start rolling with a sound victory over Delta (0-3) going away, taking full advantage in the second with an impressive 10-run frame to pull far in front.
St. Vincent baseball's season-opening matchup with Fredericktown didn't go as planned, with the Indians (0-1) dropping by a heavy decision against the Blackcats on the road.
Fredericktown only notched four hits, but that was more than enough to take down St. Vincent on Monday in a rough debut for the Indians.
Lastly, Meadow Heights (1-0) got a great start to the year by defeating East Prairie at home, overcoming a five-error game to grab the win in Patton.
The Panthers batted .360 against the Eagles, torching their starter before holding on for a big victory on home turf.
