CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Jason Meystedt's stellar pitching led Jackson's American Legion baseball team to a first-round upset in the District 14 Tournament Monday night.
Meystedt struck out 14, walked four and allowed five hits over the nine-inning distance as Jackson, seeded last among six teams, knocked off third-seeded and host Chaffee 5-2.
"Jason pitched a great game," said Jackson manager Mark Lewis, whose squad improved to 25-17 and dropped Chaffee to 18-13.
Tyler Profilet had two of Jackson's seven hits off Chaffee pitcher Trey Graviett, who also went the distance.
Jackson scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. Chaffee tied it in the fifth, but Jackson plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to go ahead for good.
Monday's other first-round game saw fourth-seeded Sikeston knock off fifth-seeded Poplar Bluff 13-8.
Sikeston (15-8) used a 17-hit attack to ease past Poplar Bluff (13-14), which trailed 9-1 after six innings.
Scotty Keenan homered, tripled twice, drove in four runs and scored four times to lead the victory. Nathan Eaves and Ben Pyles also had three hits each for Sikeston.
Josh Miller was the winning pitcher and Ryan Smith took the loss.
Today's games will feature winner's bracket semifinals. Top-seeded Cape Girardeau (22-14) takes on Sikeston at 5 p.m. and second-seeded Dunklin County (13-17) meets Jackson at 8 p.m.
