Top-seeded Meadow Heights pounded fifth-seeded Chaffee 105-58 to win their opener in the round-robin portion of the Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball tournament Monday in Patton, Mo.
Meadow Heights, enjoying its best season in more than a decade, improved to 12-3.
Joey Bell scored a game-high 35 points for the Panthers. Chris Burr added 21 points while Brad Adams had 12 and Terry Wagner 11. Meadow Heights finished with 18 3-point baskets with Bell accounting for six.
Sam Burnett paced Chaffee (1-12) with 18 points. James Reischman added 13 and Brent Thomason had 10.
In other action, Kevin Holzum scored 32 points to lead second-seeded Leopold past sixth-seeded Marquand 76-62.
Lucas Horrell added 14 points for Leopold (4-12) and Brandon Bueter finished with 10.
Adam Statler netted 27 points for Marquand.
In the JV portion of the tournament, Meadow Heights defeated Chaffee 65-49 and Leopold defeated Marquand 41-33.
Round-robin action continues tonight. In varsity, Oak Ridge meets Chaffee at 5:30 p.m. and Zalma and Marquand play at 8:30.
The championship of the six-team tournament will be Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Jackson 77, Doniphan 30
Jackson built a 33-point lead by halftime and won easily on the road.
Jackson (11-6) led 20-2 by the end of the first quarter and held a 41-8 advantage at halftime.
Jenna Leet scored 14 points to lead Jackson. Ashley Bartels had 12 and Kristen Howard added 11.
Perryville 50, Herculaneum 44
April Lorenz scored 29 points before fouling out as Perryville picked up a conference win at home.
Perryville improved to 11-7 overall and 5-1 in the Jefferson County Conference.
The Pirates led 29-21 at halftime. Lorenz hit all five of her 3-pointers in the first half as she netted 18 of the Pirates' points. Perryville took a 35-28 lead into the fourth quarter. Lorenz fouled out with a couple minutes left in the game but the Pirates held on.
Delta 85, Puxico 2
Delta held Puxico scoreless in the first half, taking a 58-0 lead into halftime in a rout at home.
Five players finished in double-figures scoring for Delta (16-2): Sarah Maria Cook had 23, followed by Katrina Flores 15, Rebecca Below 14, Rebecca Cook 13 and Sarah Jo Cook 10.
Sierra Temple had the lone basket for Puxico in the third quarter.
"We didn't press at all," Delta coach Randy White said. "We just played man the first quarter and after that just zone."
The fourth quarter was shortened to two minutes.
Kelly 52, Charleston 23
The Hawks outscored Charleston in all four quarters in a road victory.
Kelly (13-4) received 21 points from Kelly Essner, one of 10 Hawks to score.
Charleston, which played without leading scorer Missy Whitney, was held to single digits in each quarter. The Hawks outscored the Bluejays 16-2 in the second period for a 27-9 halftime lead.
Scott City 69, East Prairie 23
Every player on Scott City's team scored as it cruised to a road victory over East Prairie.
Scott City (7-10) held a 35-13 lead at halftime.
Kristen Schaefer led Scott City with 20 points and Rachel Spinks had 12.
Chaffee 65, Oran 50
Jennifer Vandeven scored 21 points as Chaffee defeated visiting Oran.
Amy Holmes added 15 points for Chaffee (5-9).
For Oran, Lexi Todt scored 15 points, Teresa Hodges put in 11 and Erica Dirnberger had 10.
Hillsboro 53, St. Vincent 45
St. Vincent dropped a Jefferson County Conference road game to Hillsboro.
St. Vincent (6-10) trailed 33-27 at halftime but Hillsboro increased its lead to double digits in the third quarter.
Chelsey Brown led the Squaws with 13 points.
OTHER EVENTS
In junior-varsity basketball, Central defeated Notre Dame at home 54-38. For Central (12-3), Eli Harris had 14 points, Anthony Meade scored 12 and Alex Ray had 10.
Jackson's eighth-grade boys defeated host Central 38-30 in the championship game of a four-team tournament. Robert Weir scored 17 points for Central, which finished its season at 5-9.
Sikeston won the third-place game 60-56 over Poplar Bluff.
