Meadow Heights eliminated in overtime

The Meadow Heights boys basketball team's strength from beyond the 3-point arc finally was matched, and it came at the worst possible time for the Panthers.

Meadow Heights' eight 3-pointers were canceled out by East Carter County's eight treys Saturday, and the Panthers fell 88-86 in overtime in the first round of the Class 2 District 2 tournament at Bloomfield.

The fourth-seeded Panthers, who had set the national record for 3-pointers in a game (36) earlier this month, played its final game without senior starter Michael Collier, who was out due to illness. Collier averaged 16 points in his final five games of the season.

"In the first quarter, we were nervous," said Panthers coach Tom Brown, whose team shot 5 for 17 from the field in the first quarter before shooting 50 percent the rest of the game. "Without Collier, it was different out there.

"They played a great game, but we just couldn't buy a bucket when we needed it."

Meadow Heights trailed by seven points at halftime but used a 14-0 run in the third quarter to go ahead by 10. East Carter countered by hitting five of seven 3s at the end of the third, reducing Meadow Heights' lead to six.

In the final quarter, East Carter drained three more 3s and sent the game to overtime on a tip-in with 0.2 seconds remaining.

East Carter went ahead 88-86 in the final seconds of overtime before Meadow Heights lost control of the ball without getting a shot off.

Anthony Bollinger led the Panthers with 32 points, followed by Terry Wagner with 20 and Heath Fulton with 18.

Meadow Heights, which will lose all five starters to graduation, ended its season at 18-7.

Kelly advanced to the semifinal round of the Class 3 District 2 tournament with a 76-29 blowout victory against Woodland at Greenville High School.

Also in the first round, Scott City's season ended with a 73-61 loss at the hands of Puxico.

Second-seeded Kelly (17-9) will meet No. 3 Puxico in the semifinals 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, and top-seeded Charleston will take on No. 5 Clearwater.

Kelly scored 50 points in the first half and carried a 73-16 lead into the final frame.

Spencer Ayers led 11 Kelly scorers with 13 points. Jacob Glastetter netted 12, and Dallas Tew added 10.

Cody Barrett scored seven points to lead Woodland (5-19).

Sixth-seeded Scott City was outscored 29-11 in the last 8 minutes in its defeat.

Scott City (10-14) was led by Ethan Watkins' 17 points. Alex King added 13, and Jamie Pinkston had 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Class 3 District 2

Top-seeded Kelly held No. 8 Puxico to six second-half points en route to a 61-30 win in the first round of the Class 3 District 2 tournament at Greenville High School.

The Hawks (18-8) will play the winner of Monday's Clearwater-East Prairie game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Debra Hall led Kelly with 20 points. Brittany Ponder had 13, and Kayla Cissell netted 10.

In other first-round action, No. 7 Scott City ended its season with a 73-46 loss to second-second Greenville.

Greenville exploded for 27 points in the second quarter to put the Rams (3-19) away.

Kelley Hicks led Scott City with 15 points, and Becky Holder added 13 for Scott City.
