It's easy to catch Big Mac fever, especially when Mark McGwire returns to St. Louis Cardinals action after recuperating from surgery. And, true to form, McGwire gave his fans what they have come to expect: a home run in his first game after getting off the disabled list.
McGwire's ability to excite a crowd of baseball fans is legendary. He has repeatedly managed to swat the ball into home-run territory at crucial stages throughout his career.
But Big Mac has his off days too. Wednesday night's 0-for-3 performance -- including two outs on called third strikes -- is an example.
But the thrill of anticipation and the sheer joy of seeing a McGwire home run is what makes him such an important part of the Cardinals. Welcome back, Big Mac.
